For some of us, it never left.
For Millennial’s and Generation X (the generation between the boomer and the millennial), the “going out” top could be considered as a rite of passage. To us, it symbolized a coming of age, a top you would wear for a special occasion and in many ways represented your first glimpse of independence/freedom. The first “going out top” would be for a milestone birthday, and from then onwards you would re-wear or buy a new “going out top” for the next major social function. For some, it would be a top that one could wear to work during the day and then later at night for dinner or to the club. The top was the moment; it made you feel confident, it made you feel good and it was easy to style. Most “going out tops” at the time were either peplum, halter or cowl neck silhouettes and are all arguably universally flattering and pair well with both trousers and jeans.
Most of our recommendations are a pretty penny, however you can use these examples as inspo to find a more affordable option. See some of our favourites below!
1.
Toteme
This silhouette will stand the test of time. Its structure and design is strong yet feminine and would pair well with jeans or a trouser. The choice is yours.
2.
Rezek Studio
This is for those extra days you feel like being the main character and dont mind getting stared at. Reminiscent of the foxy women in the 70s that loved sequin and feathers; there was no other era that embodied the “going out top” as lifestyle more than the studio 54 era.
3.
Miaou
The double trimming and ruching makes this top very flattering. Pairing this with jeans is a no-brainer but this would look even better with a pencil skirt (yes pencil skirts are on their way back, don’t say we didn’t warn you!)
4.
Dries Van Noten
Dries Van Noten anything is a win. This top makes you want to go out for no reason at all, it deserves to be shown off.
5.
Rosie Assoulin
Making Your Point off-the-shoulder cotton-blend twill top: $795 $397 (USD)
Rosie Assoulin shoulder point top makes you look like a present. The sharp shoulders look like a bow, which makes you a present…remember you are the prize!
6.
Aisling Camps
New York darling Aisling Camps is making waves literally and figuratively with their sheer pleated turtleneck.
7.
Kika Vargas
Black Chiara Blouse: $835 $251
Kika Vargas truly makes the best bold girly garments. This top with a pair of jeans is a match made in heaven.
8.
Reformation
Reformation is the 2023 reigning champ in creating the best of the best “going out tops”.
9.
Rick Owens
This top is a cult favourite. This top is dark, feminine and etherial. We assume this top was named after the Grecian goddess Athena who was the daughter of Zeus that was known as “Greek goddess of wisdom and good counsel, war”. One could assume this top fits her described persona.
10.
Cecilie Bahnsen
Navy James Camisole: $1215 $729
