30 Oct Fall 2022 im a GORPcore girlie.
Gorpcore is a satorial style of dressing coined by writer Jason Chen defined as “a style of fashion characterized by functional outdoor wear such as fleece jackets, parkas, gore-tex jackets and pants alongside many other utilitarian styles”. GORP is an acronym for granola, oats, raisins, and peanuts; snacks that are generally associated with outdoor enthusiasts. Examples of gorpcore clothing include (but not limited to) Northface nuptse bomber jackets, Arcteryx parkas, Salomon hiking boots, cargo pants and Birkenstocks (more specifically Arizona and Boston styles) and the coveted Patagonia and Northface fleece jackets/vests to name a few. Other types of aesthetics such as normcore and vintage have influenced this style of dressing by taking elements of its understated casualness (normcore) and mixing it with loose yet tailored silhouettes (vintage) making gorpcore a by product of the two. Normcore in the streets was the antithesis to fast fashion: normal everyday clothing such as jeans, sweatshirts and sneakers was now considered high fashion thus, rebelling against they many ways in which we have been over stimulated by the fast fashion machine and exclusionary nature of luxury goods. With major celebrities such as Shia LaBeuof, Frank Ocean, A$AP Rocky wearing high end outdoor gear such as Mammut and Arcteryx, we seen a major shift on the fashion runways and in street style. Brands such as Louis Vuitton and Gucci had quickly followed suit by either incorporating or collaborating with outdoor brands in creating gorpcore collections.
Arcteryx seen in Offwhite show
Although this aesthetic may seem like hiker cosplay, its same purpose and thinking of wearing clothing with technical and functional properties during outdoor activities can be applied in cities. Living in cities with unpredictable weather calls for comfort and contrary to popular belief you don’t need to spend a lot to achieve the look. Skip all the hypebeat elements by swapping an Arcteryx coat for a vintage Columbia coat, or a Patagonia fleece for a Uniqlo one. Here’s a few reasons why we will be incorporating Gorpcore/normcore into our FW22 closests.
1. Comfort
Whether you’re a student or an adult running errands the older you get the more you favour comfort. This aesthetic provides comfort all while looking put together by meeting functionality and fashion at an intersection. Gorpcore is generally associated with track-pants/cargo’s but suggest adding a few normcore elements by incorporating LEVIS 501’s.
2. Flattering on all body types
The gorpcore/normcore looser silhouettes allows for wiggle room making the aesthetic flattering on all body types all while looking cool with minimal effort. Best part of this aesthetic is accessories like side-bags/satchels/totes, beanies, bucket hats and sunglasses to elevate this look from basic to fresh off the runway fast. (image: @itswilmahansson)
3. Weather Appropriate
A key feature with gorpcore is in its layering capabilities. If you are living in a city with unpredictable weather we suggest you pair a tshirt under a fleece quarter-zip paired with either cargos/jeans/maxi skirt with wool socks and birkenstocks which allow you to be prepared for any drastic weather spike.
