The name of the game is called ‘adulting’ where you’re more concerned with your thread count more than ever before. The amount of research and conversations we would have in our late teens and early 20’s on frivolous things have somehow changed into conversations about magnesium intake, starting businesses and quality bedding.
Generally consumers tend to gravitate towards 100% cotton sheets with high thread counts, the assumption is the higher the thread count the better the quality however that may not be necessarily true. The bedding industry can be deceiving and at times exploitive. Marketers take advantage of consumers by using buzzy words like “100% Egyptian cotton” or using thread counts as a measure for quality. In reality, high thread counts are less breathable and less durable than they market them to be. In fact, any thread count above 500 doesn’t really make a difference in comparison to a 1500 thread count sheet. Instead, you should use fabric type, texture and feel as a personal measure. For example, if you prefer soft and breathable materials, a thread count between 300-500 is recommended.
Egyptian and bamboo cotton is marketed to be the creme de la creme of bedding, that may of been true at some point, but have you heard of eucalyptus sheets? These sheets are made from the wood fibre of eucalyptus trees also known as lyocell. These fibres are grown without the use of harsh chemicals (like pesticides or fertilizers) which make them the ideal choice for people with skin allergies. Not only is it hypoallergenic, ( unlike cotton and linen sheets that attract dust mites and mould) these sheets have long lasting properties as it get softer after every wash. The plants natural fibres and antimicrobial properties makes it resistant to wear and tear allowing you to enjoying your sheets for a longer period of time.
